Awa ... Messing Around With Boats

Sydney Morning Herald

Monday December 21, 1987

In a few days we will see the start of the Sydney Hobart yacht race, arguably the most universally appreciated maritime sporting event on the calender. As boats jockey and joust for position before that breathtaking surge to the Heads give a thought to AWA who, once again, are providing the computer back-up and radio communications for this annual event. AWA, with the assitance of Scitec Communications Systems, provide continually updated race details as the yachts record their position with the communication centre at the Cruising Yacht Club at Rushcutters Bay and the Royal Yacht Club in Tasmania. The centre of the network is, yet again, the radio ship Wyuna, loaned by the Australian Maritime College. The excercise can be thought of as AWA's Christmas gift to Australia
